Elgin "States 670" - sold
Elgin "States Series" 670. Excellent white gold filled case, 27mm x 35mm to lug tips. 16mm lug width, white gold-filled case with engraved pattern, brown leather strap, original silvered dial with radium painted numerals, 15J grade 428 movement has just been cleaned, oiled and adjusted. Includes presentation box. Elgin created "Series" in the late 1920s around a certain theme or price point. The "States" series was priced in the $40 to $50 range and included many nice Art Deco models, including the 679, 204, 682, 459, 944, and probably most famously, the 226, aka, "Skyscraper." This Model 670 is in untouched, unmolested form. Some people like their watches ultra-restored, like they just came out of a gumball machine. But I like to leave my watches "as found" to preserve their character. This watch was obviously well used in its day, but thankfully not abused. These Elgin Art Deco watches are finally getting the respect (and pricing) they deserve, considering the rarity of surviving examples.
